Use of Naked Eye Single Tube Red Cell Osmotic Fragility Test as a Screening Tool for Beta Thalassemia Trait

The significance of thalassemia lies not only in the fact that it is the commonest single gene disorder but also because its elimination, though challenging, is not impossible. The need of the day is to find a reliable and cost-effective method to screen for asymptomatic carriers and subsequently, their education, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis, and selective termination of affected fetuses.
