Islamabad meaning "Adobe of Islam" or "Adobe of Peace" is the capital of Pakistan, and is the length largest city in Pakistan with an estimated population on 1.74 million in 2009. The Rawalpindi/Islamabad Metropolitan area is the third largest in Pakistan, with a population of over 4.5 million inhabitants.
Islamabad is located in the Pothohar Plateau, in the foot hills of Margallas. The city was built during the 1960s to be the capital of Pakistan. There are beautiful scenic locations in and around Islamabad like Daman-e-Koh, Shkarparian, Pir Sohawa, Rawal Dam, High rising Mountains of Muree, Patriata, Gilliyat and Abbottabad. It is a gate way to Nothern areas of Pakistan and Kashmir. Another attraction is the old Gandhara civilization, the remains of which have been excavated at Taxila.
The sister city of Rawalpindi is the largest city in Pothohar Plateau, which became host to the shifted capital from Karachi. The city has some very historic sites like Topi Rakh (Ayub National Park), Jinnah Park and the famous Muree road.
